In September I was lucky enough to join a week-long press trip to Atlanta with a focus on art and social change. The trip was sponsored by Brave Nu Ventures, and it was truly an impactful glimpse into Atlanta’s local art scene, as well as the perfect introduction to the heart of this beautiful city. Our planned activities inspired me, pushed me past my comfort zone, and opened my mind to new ideas, places, and people. Below are some of the highlights of the trip, and some of the ways you can expect to expand your own comfort zone when you travel with Brave Nu Ventures.

How I Expanded my Comfort Zone in Atlanta

Exploring Art with Brave Nu Ventures

Atlanta is a city bursting with art. Murals adorn the city’s walls, putting artist’s dreams and visions on public display. Atlanta’s art is proud and playful. Even the sidewalks are filled with flowers, rainbows, and symbols of hope. Where I live in Orange County, California, we have murals too, but not nearly to this extent. It was refreshing to experience a place of art unleashed, the city itself a canvas. I can only imagine how growing up in a city literally covered in art can effect one’s creativity.

Visiting MODA, the Museum of Design Atlanta

Hearing the Journey of a Muralist

One of the included activities on my Brave Nu Venture was a visit to MODA, the Museum of Design Atlanta. MODA is located in the heart of the Midtown Arts District, and celebrates design as a creative force that inspires change. Our visit to MODA was centered around meeting artist and muralist Aysha Pennerman, who talked about her career and passion for art. The examples she showed of murals she has done for communities around the world was so inspiring. I love hearing about the successes of people who have turned their passion into a career.

Getting Hands on with a Chalk Mural

After the talk with Aysha Pennerman at MODA, we got to participate in a group chalk art piece, where we each contributed our own symbols of what social change means to us. It was a thoughtful activity. I saw some of our group doing elaborate drawings while others were chalking up stick figures, but we all contributed despite our varying artistic capabilities. We all had a good laugh about it and enjoyed participating in an activity that pushed us past our comfort zones.

I asked Aysha what advice she would give to all the other aspiring artists out there, and her main message was to never give up. She said to take the rejection with light, as it’s just another door to your next yes. She also advised that when you find yourself doing a lot of work for others, to be sure to take time for your passion projects, as they are therapeutic and what keep us going.

Visiting the Splatter Paint Studio

One of my favorite activities was the Splatter Paint Studio, a place where you can let your inner artist loose, no matter your skill level. This studio is literally covered from floor to ceiling in paint streaks and splatters, marks left by past painters going to town on their canvases. Rows of canvases and paint stations lined the walls, ready and prepped for our group’s arrival with tons of colors, brushes and super soaker paint launchers. Some of us started out a bit hesitant and reserved, while others came out swinging with the paint launchers. Either way, by the end of the night, we were settled well past our comfort zones, smiling and covered in paint, proud of our crazy, beautiful masterpieces.

Visiting the Decatur Makers Workshop

Brainstorming and Making a Prototype

As a fan of some of the TV shows out there about makers (Making It, Making Fun) I was super excited to visit Decatur Makers. I love the idea of making something from concept to creation. Upon entering the workshop, we were surrounded by workstations, materials, tools, and projects. It was a maker’s paradise. We did a group exercise in design thinking and broke out into small teams to design a physical prototype for an abstract idea. I loved the open and creative energy from the makers I was paired with, and was proud of our little model that we made out of random materials.

Reflecting on our Experience

Brainstorming and creative workshops are activities that I love and thrive within, so I felt I was really in my element at this workshop. We had a moment however, where we went around the group and took turns giving a word about how this activity was making us feel. I think I said something like creative or inspired, but I did notice that a few others had words like overwhelmed, confused, or anxious. This activity really pushed hard on some of our group’s comfort zones, but on the walk out everyone was buzzing with excited conversation and stories.

Learning About Civil Rights with Brave Nu Ventures

Visiting the National Center for Civil and Human Rights

Experiencing the Exhibits

A visit to the National Center for Civil and Human Rights was included in my trip to Atlanta with Brave Nu Ventures. It was a moving experience, and one that definitely required me to step outside my comfort zone. Walking through the civil rights floor of the museum took us on a journey through many emotions. It was full of beautiful, thoughtful displays where we could listen to speeches, read stories, view photos, and watch videos. The entire experience felt very immersive and interactive, and I would recommend it to everyone visiting Atlanta.

Leaving our Comfort Zones at the Door

The one that really got me was an interactive display where you sit down at a table, put headphones on, close your eyes, and see if you can last through the whole experience. The audio essentially gave a very real experience of sitting in a restaurant and being taunted and threatened if you didn’t leave immediately. The violence and fear that came from that audio brought some of our group to tears. This journey through the museum was an emotional one. We knew it would be emotional, willingly stepped past our comfort zones to enter that museum, and we all left better for it.

Going on the Civil Rights Walking Tour

Learning with Unexpected Atlanta

On our Brave Nu Venture we got to do a Civil Rights Walking Tour with the company Unexpected Atlanta. Our tour guide Leigh was so full of knowledge and energy. It’s clear that she feels a passion for educating and helping others really dive into the harsh issues and triumphant moments of Atlanta’s past. She played us clips of iconic speeches from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on her iPad, which really added to the immersive experience. It made me feel closer to the city as we walked through historical Atlanta, listening to stories of heroes who walked these very streets.

Reflecting at the King Center

Our tour concluded at the King Center in all its peace and beauty. There is a giant cascading fountain that leads to the resting place of Dr. and Mrs. King. I loved that quotes and words were inscribed everywhere. In the fountain, on the the fountain, on the sidewalk, and even on the steps and railings. I felt surrounded by the wisdom of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We passed the eternal flame, a rose garden filled with poetry, and plenty of shady green areas for visitors to sit and rest awhile. The inspiration at the King Center spreads the message that civil rights are alive and well in Atlanta.

Supporting Equitable Dinners

Learning About the Event

Equitable Dinners is a collaborative, city-wide event that inspires anti-racist action through art and courageous conversations. The event begins with a one person play and is followed by a shared meal with strangers, where a host helps facilitate dialogue filled with honesty, depth, and mutual respect. While I’m sure our group would’ve loved stepping out of our comfort zones and into those Equitable Dinner events, we were there just a few weeks too early. Instead, we got to involve ourselves by helping to create promotional content.

Growing as Interviewers and Promoters

We visited the campus of Atlanta University. Center Here we met and took turns interviewing Andrea Jackson Gavin, the director of engagement and scholarship at AUC. Her passion for Equitable Dinners and willingness to answer our questions was truly inspiring. While getting in front of the camera and being in a live interview was a bit uncomfortable for some of our group, we felt so rewarded to have helped spread awareness about this amazing event.

Making Connections Through Brave Nu Ventures

Sharing the Experience of Good Food

The two restaurants featured on this trip were Chai Pani and Slutty Vegan. Chai Pani is a colorful, cozy spot in Decatur that features James Beard Award winning Indian street food from Chef Meherwan Irani. Slutty Vegan is Atlanta’s high-energy vegan burger joint that spawned from the imagination of CEO and founder Pinky Cole. Both restaurants were visually stunning with imaginative food and amazing flavors. I’m a vegetarian who loves Indian food, so I felt right at home in both of these restaurants, but for some of those in our group it was their first time trying Indian dishes and plant-based proteins. Expanding horizons through food is such a personal yet shared experience, and I thought it was a nice touch to let us explore and connect through food on our Brave Nu Venture.

Building Community Through Tea and Agriculture

Learning Together

Two great inclusions on our Brave Nu Venture that centered around community and shared knowledge were our visits to Just Add Honey and the Wylde Center. Both of these visits completely took me out of my comfort zone because they involved topics I knew very little about. At Just Add Honey, our group participated in a tea tasting together, learning the intricacies of tea varieties, blends, and tasting notes. At the Wylde Center we learned about growing herbs and vegetables, and volunteered together in the plant nursery repotting seedlings.

Getting Hands On Together

Both of these events had a hands on component: I got to make my own tea blend, and I worked to replant a couple trays of little mustard plants. I picked up knowledge from the experts at the Wylde Center that I still use today in my personal garden. By allowing us to join these community activities together as a group, it not only allowed us to make connections with the employees but connections with each other as a travel group. I happily stepped out of my comfort zone as a novice in these two subjects, and walked out with some new skills and stories to tell.

Immersing Myself in Decatur, Georgia

Staying in a new city literally expands your comfort zone because you’re suddenly in a completely new location, and have no choice but to explore unknown streets, be inspired by new murals, and walk into new restaurants where you’ll try new flavors and meet new people. I loved walking to Decatur Square in my free evenings. Decatur Square had some amazing restaurants, shops from small business owners, and fun, colorful murals. It was such a peaceful and welcoming city, and some of my favorite moments were hearing local musicians play music as the sun set.

Summary: How I Expanded my Comfort Zone in Atlanta

This was my first trip to Atlanta, and instead of just seeing the major sights on my own, I felt like I got the full introduction to heart of the city thanks to Brave Nu Ventures. I explored so many new locations and ideas, learned about fascinating topics, and connected with locals and my new travel buddies. It can be overwhelming to try new things sometimes, so booking a trip with like minded travelers is the best way to go. Brave Nu Ventures is a refreshing example of how to travel deeper, and I can’t wait to see what awesome new adventures become available with Brave Nu.

Joshua Tree National Park is massive, so if you’re planning on driving through it or well into the middle of it, it’s best to make sure your packing list is ready and you have everything you need. If Taking a Hike in Joshua Tree National Park

There are a lot of great hikes in Joshua Tree National Park, ranging from easy-paced to strenuous. Depending on the type of hike you’re planning to do, you may need any or all of the following items.

  • Clothing made for desert hikes: Be sure to dress appropriately for the desert. Wear lightweight, breathable fabric and sturdy shoes. Hiking shoes are recommended, and preferably long pants to protect your legs from cacti, shrubs, and snakes.
  • First aid kit: A small first aid kit is always recommended for any Joshua Tree packing list, esecially if out for a hike. Scrapes, bites, or accidents are never expected, but it’s always best to be prepared.
  • Tech items: A back up power bank is a great idea in case your phone or other equipment needs a charge. A compass carabiner is a great tool to clip on your bag just in case. A chargeable pocket fan is fun for keeping cool while on the go, and a GoPro Camera is an exciting way to improve your Joshua Tree hiking photography.

Campground Kitchen Items

  • Camp cookware set. These heavy duty pots and pans can go over the fire. It comes with camp utensils as well. I like these sets because they all pack together nicely into one compact bag.
  • Foldable camp kitchen. I think these are genius. This one contains a large, heat resistant surface, perfect for your pots and pans or camp stove. It has shelving for storage, a hook for a light, and a collapsible sink with drain. And they are easy to collapse for quick take down.
  • A good cooler. I have this Coleman heavy duty cooler and keeps things cold for several days.
  • Campfire roasting sticks. These are extendible and perfect for roasting s’mores or hotdogs over the campfire. One of the most fun items that I would recommend for a Joshua Tree packing list.
  • Camping stove. I use this Coleman model and I love it. It has two burners and folds closed for easy packing. Be sure bring propane for the camp stove.
  • Steel kettle with nesting cups. Nice for camping and hiking.

Visiting the beach at Hotel Del Coronado was one of the highlights of my recent trip to San Diego in July. It’s a well-maintained, long stretch of beach, with rows of red and white striped beach umbrellas contrasting beautifully with the light sand and blue sky. We loved relaxing in the cool San Diego breeze, listening to the waves, and watching the occasional military helicopters and jets flying overhead. I rented 2 lounge chairs from Hotel Del Coronado, and had lunch on site. Below is a bit about my experience, including some travel tips, to help you prepare for your own visit to this iconic beach.

Where to Park and How to Find the Beach

My visit was on a Friday, and the free street parking was completely full when I arrived around 11am. If you get there early, you may be able to grab a free parking spot on the street, but if not, I recommend using the covered self parking in the structure at Hotel Del Coronado. Be sure to save your ticket, as you pay upon exit. They also validate in the gift shop if you spend at least $10.

Coronado Beach is a private beach, but the access is free. Head towards the entrance of Hotel Del Coronado and follow the signs for beach access. You can bring your own beach equipment as well as rent lounge chairs, beach chairs, and day beds.

Renting Beach Equipment at Hotel Del Coronado

Hotel Del Coronado rents out beach chairs, umbrellas, lounge chairs, and day beds. Once booked, the rental is yours from 10am to sunset. I booked a pair of lounge chairs online via the Hotel Del Coronado website, but they are also available for renting on site. There is a stand on the beach where you can check in and get your towels. They give you some wristbands and one of the staff will walk you to your spot.

Renting a Lounge Chair

After we checked in at the beach stand, one of the staff members gave us our wristbands, grabbed us a couple of towels, and told us we could pick any of the available pairs of lounge chairs with a beach umbrella included. We picked a pair of chairs in the 2nd row, and the staff member offered to move them over for us to be in better spot. He moved both chairs and the umbrella for us, and left us to enjoy the beach. One thing I learned was that the positioning of the lounge chairs is pretty far from the water, but we preferred these anyways because we wanted to lay down and relax.

Renting a Beach Chair

The beach chairs were located right on the shoreline. This is the spot to be if you plan on getting in and out of the water, or if you’re bringing kids who want to play in the wet sand. You can rent the beach chairs ahead of time online at the Hotel Del Coronado website, or you can walk up to the beach stand and rent them on the spot. The chairs do not come with a beach umbrella, but you can rent one of those as well.

Renting a Day Bed

Renting a day bed looked like the most luxurious option to choose while visiting the beach at Hotel Del Coronado. They’re about twice the price of the lounge chairs, but they do look like they provide a bit more shade. The day beds are located in a row right in front of the lounge chairs, so while they are slightly closer to the water than the lounge chairs, they are still quite a walk from the water. You can rent day beads ahead of time online or on site at the beach rental stand.

Food and Drink Service

I knew the Beach and Taco Shack delivered to the day beds, but I was very happy to learn that they delver to beachgoers in the lounge chairs as well. We sat about 20 minutes before one of the waiters came to our chairs, and we ordered 2 signature cocktails. He offered us a taco menu as well, but we were just starting with the cocktails. It took about 20 minutes to receive the drinks, and they were delicious. If you’re not in a hurry, this is a fantastic and relaxing option. The Beach and Taco Shack is a short walk away from the chairs, however, so guests are welcome to walk over and get their own food and cocktails if they choose.

Where to Have Lunch When Visiting the Beach at Hotel Del Coronado

The best spot to have lunch is at the Beach and Taco Shack. It’s a short walk across the sand to get to the shack, but it’s nice because they have tables and umbrellas for sitting. We waited in line for about 15 minutes and ordered beer and tacos. There was a small stage set up on the sand next to the tables, so we got to enjoy some live music while we enjoyed our lunch. We could’ve taken our food to the lounge chairs as well, but sitting in this spot was definitely the better option.

What to Pack for your Day at Coronado Beach:

  • A good beach bag. It’s a bit of a walk from the parking to the beach, so pack it all up in a beach bag.
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat. Check out my article on choosing a summer sun hat.
  • Towels. The beach equipment rental stand offers towels to those renting chairs and day beds, but if you’d like your own, be sure to bring a beach towel. I recommend these quick dry, sand free towels.
  • Water. They sell water at the beach shack, but it’s recommended to bring your own. I like to keep a Hydroflask in my beach bag to keep my water cool.

Check out the Gift Shop Inside the Hotel

I did not expect to see such an awesome gift shop inside Hotel Del Coronado. Located right near the lobby, this gift shop has everything from shirts, hats, and handbags, to postcards, art prints, and keychains. Almost everything has the Hotel Del Coronado branding on it, making these items perfect for gifts and souvenirs. They also had some essentials for purchase in the shop like cold drinks and sunscreen.

Be Sure to Check out the Hotel Lobby

If you didn’t already see it on your way in, be sure to check out the lobby of the Hotel Del Coronado. If you’re coming from the beach, make sure you’re properly dressed first. Stepping into that lobby is like stepping back in time, surrounded by chandeliers, beautiful dark wood, and a restored vintage elevator, which is the original from when the hotel was built.

Other Activities Available for Booking When Visiting the Beach at Hotel Del Coronado

Hotel Del Coronado offers plenty of other awesome activities available for booking online. If you’re staying at the hotel, or wanting to spend your weekend at Coronado, there are tons of things to at the beach. The activities vary seasonally as well (like ice skating at the beach!), so be sure to check the hotel website if you’re visiting around the holidays.

  • Rent a fire pit right on the beach from 6-8pm. Roast s’mores and enjoy the sunset.
  • Surf lessons. Take a private or group lesson, or even book a photography surf package.
  • Rent some bikes. Enjoy your beach cruisers from 10am-4pm.
  • Beach Yoga is available on Saturdays and Sundays at 10am.

Looking for More California Beach Gems?

Every summer from mid July through mid August, the county fair comes to Orange County, California. Towering ferris wheels and neon-colored rides add to the skyline as the smells of kettle corn, barbecue, and barnyard hay fill the air. Wandering between rows of roasting meat and fried desserts to the crowded village of handmade trinkets in the marketplace can be a photographer’s dream. Below are my top Instagrammable photo spots at the Orange County Fair.

1. Carnival Rides and Games (the most colorful Instagrammable photo spots at the Orange County Fair)

The Carnival Rides and Games area of the OC Fair is the wildest section of the event. The combination of neon colors in the day time makes for stunning photos in the California sun. Pick a game like water shooting, ball throwing, or ring tossing, and grab some great action shots. Be sure the game is in the background so you get the full display of colors behind you. Standing in front of some colorful rides, holding crazy fair food or game prizes always make fun shots as well. If you’re still around after sunset, this location lights up and becomes magical at night.

Carnival Ride and Game Tickets

There are two carnival areas at the OC Fair: Main Carnival and Kidland. Ride and game tickets can be purchased at the ticket booths on site, or there is an app called FunPass, which you can use to buy tickets ahead of time or reload while at the fair.

2. Centennial Farm

The Centennial Farm is one of my favorite Instagrammable photo spots at the Orange County Fair. It’s a 3-acre working farm, and is perfect for pictures including flowers, red barn backdrops, antique farm equipment, and pretty rows of growing crops. Using a background of sunflowers or growing corn makes for some pretty wholesome and adorable county fair photos.

Centennial Farm Animals

The farm also has animals on display, including pigs (check out the OC Fair Pig Cam to watch the piglets!), goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits, and plenty more. They are brought to the fair during the day, and relax in the shade sleeping and grazing on food. While I love seeing the animals, I don’t think they’re the best subjects or backgrounds for Instagram photos. But I recommend visiting these areas with kids, or if you’re just obsessed with cute animals like I am.

Visiting the Centennial Farm at the OC Fair

The Centennial Farm is open from 10am – 4pm daily while the fair is in town. The crops and flowers will look the most fresh in the morning, and if you’re looking for evening photos, be sure to show up before 4pm to get your shots. This area tends to be most crowded at midday as well, so best to grab your Centennial Farm photos in the morning or afternoon.

3. Designated Selfie Spots (the funniest Instagrammable photo spots at the Orange County Fair)

The OC Fair has caught up to social media, and has started providing designated selfie spots and photo stations. They are always really clever and cute, and are fun for both kids and adults. A lot of these are large photo props or backdrops, so it’s best to have a friend (or friendly stranger) take your photos for you to get the full piece in the photo, rather than trying to take a selfie. Be sure to tag #ocfairfun for a chance to be featured on the Orange County Fair Instagram!

Selfie Spot Location: California Fresh Exhibit

The selfie spot station may change locations from time to time, but lately it’s been located inside the California Fresh Exhibit, which is at the OC Promenade. This is perfect because it’s located in a shaded area, convenient for getting you out of the midday sun. This is one of the unique Instagrammable photo spots at the Orange County Fair that is actually perfect for noon when the sun is too harsh for photos outside.

4. The Food Stalls

The food stalls are notoriously over the top at the OC Fair, and make for amazing and funny photos. There are rows and rows of businesses competing with each other, so they are all decked out in bright colors, with eye-catching signs and flags. Most have giant images of the foods being offered, which can be fun to stand in front of while holding the actual food.

No Shortage of Options for Food

There is something for everyone at the OC Fair. The most over the top booths are usually for barbecue and desserts. The barbecue stalls usually have giant slabs of meat hanging on display and being cooked right out front, with smoke filling the air as you pass by. The desserts range from standard treats like ice cream and slushees to fried treats like Oreos and Twinkies. The food booths are open late into the night as well, underlit with spot lights, making the food stalls a pretty surreal and fun spot for Instagram night pictures.

5. The Big OC Fair Sign (one of the most iconic Instagrammable photo spots at the Orange County Fair)

The large OC Fair sign welcomes guests as they enter the Orange County Fairgrounds. It’s iconic, and is the perfect spot for taking photos. The sign is usually pretty large, so either pick one letter to stand in front of, or stand on the far end of the sign to try and squeeze the whole sign in your frame at an angle. This is a great group or family photo, so don’t be afraid to ask some friendly strangers to snap your picture at this spot.

What to Bring to the Orange County Fair

Visiting the Orange County Fair can be an all day event, so make sure you’re prepared. Below are some items and tips on what to pack when visiting the OC Fair.

  • Back up batteries. Whether you’re using your phone or a camera to take photos, be sure to bring the necessary charging cords and power banks to keep you going.
  • A backpack or tote bag. Not only are you probably bringing a lot, you may be shopping a lot as well. Make sure you have space to hold it all.
  • A good camera. I like to bring my Sony Alpha 6000 Mirrorless Camera, or I just use my iPhone when I don’t want too much to carry. For more on what photography equipment I use, be sure to check out my article on Travel Blogging Photography Gear.
  • Water bottle, but only if in a factory-sealed bottle. Plenty of water and other drinks are sold at the fair as needed.

  • Comfortable shoes. You’ll be walking all day. If you’re really wanting to wear something nicer in your Instagram photos, bringing a change of shoes may be a good idea.
  • A change of clothes for some variety in your photos. If you’re wanting to take your Instagram game to the next level, bring a change of clothes for some variety. That way you’re not wearing the exact same thing in all of your photos.
  • Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. Why not make the hat a cute one for photos? Check out my article on choosing a summer sun hat.
  • Hand sanitizer, especially if you’re going to be playing games and going on rides.

What Not to Bring

Be sure to check the General Information Page on the OC Fair website for a list of things not to bring. Some useful examples include: Do not bring selfie sticks, tripods, professional photography equipment, or drones.

If you embark on this bison expedition, you’ll be taken to all the right spots and given the best chances to spot some of these notorious and beautiful beasts. Below are some of my experiences from the bison expedition I took on my most recent trip, as well some tips on what to expect and what to bring on tour.

Why are There Bison on Catalina Island?

In 1924, a small herd of 14 bison were brought to Catalina Island to be part of a movie that was filming at the time. After film production ended, the bison were left on the island to freely roam. Since then, the herd has grown in size, and they have become local icons. The bison are protected by the Catalina Island Conservancy and are a popular tourist attraction.

The Catalina Bison (aka Buffalo) are Local Icons

Much of the Catalina Island merchandise features images of the bison, aka buffalo (the 2 terms are used interchangeably). The gift shops have bison souvenirs ranging from carved statues and jewelry to postcards and calendars. The island even has a signature cocktail called Buffalo Milk. It doesn’t actually contain milk, however. I had to try one, and it turned out to be a delicious mix of vodka, crème de cacao, crème de banana, Kailua, half n’ half, and fresh nutmeg.

What to Expect on the Bison Expedition Tour at Catalina Island

The Tour Guide

Our tour guide, Halvey, met our group at the designated meeting point. We were instructed to arrive 20 minutes early, and everyone was there on time. We didn’t need printed tickets, as showing the tour purchase confirmation on or phones was just fine. I had read ahead of time that the guides on the Catalina jeep tours were fantastic, and my expectations were exceeded. Halvey had a great sense of humor and knew tons of incredible facts about the island and its history. He narrated the tour over the speakers in the jeep, and kept us smiling the whole time.

The Jeep

The bison expedition at Catalina Island takes place in an open-air, 12 person jeep. It does have a roof for shade, although the sun will still be coming in from the sides. Our guide drove us up some winding roads that were unpaved and bumpy at times. At no point was the ride uncomfortable, however. There were large storage nets on the backs of the seats, so there is room to securely store items like purses, backpacks, and water bottles.

The Bison

There is no guarantee that you will get to see a bison, or buffalo, on your tour. They are wild animals who roam the island freely, so there is a chance they may be too far away from the roads during your expedition. I didn’t want to get my hopes up, and decided I would have fun even if the bison expedition only involved a cool jeep tour up into the hills of Catalina Island. Our whole group was on the lookout across the green and brown hills as we drove down the dirt paths. The guide said “if you see a big brown boulder, that’s most likely a bison.”

Keep an eye out for bison

To my surprise, we turned a corner, and there was a huge lone bison right on the side of the road, grazing on some grass. He stayed in his spot, eating his grass, seemingly unfazed at the jeep full of tourists taking his picture. Our guide stopped the engine for a bit and we just sat there for a while watching the bison. Even though he seemed like a peaceful animal, we stayed in the jeep, as they can be deadly if threatened or provoked. Along the rest of our expedition, we saw multiple other bison as well, roaming in herds across the hills with the ocean view in the background.

What to Bring on the Bison Expedition at Catalina Island

  • Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. We took the tour that started at 2pm, and the sun was shining bright into the jeep.
  • For those with long hair, bring a hair tie or clip. The wind on that ride was no joke.
  • Water
  • Comfortable shoes or sandals. There wasn’t much walking involved, but we did have to climb a few big steps to get in and out of the jeep.
  • Camera. Even if you don’t spot any bison, the scenic view from the Catalina hills provide a ton of great photo opportunities.
  • Cash. If you’d like to tip the guide after the tour, come prepared with some cash.

Planning a Trip to Catalina Island?

The falconry experience at Catalina Island was one of the first things I booked for my recent trip in May. I love animals and take any chance I can to learn about them. I’m happy to say that my expectations for this adventure were very much exceeded. From the insanely beautiful park setting at Descanso Beach to the friendly and knowledgable instructor, I loved every part of my experience with the falcons of Catalina Island. Below is a summary of what I experienced as well as some tips on what to expect if you’re considering booking the experience for yourself.

How Long is the Falconry Experience at Catalina Island?

I booked the first time slot of the day at 9:45am, and it was listed as a 75 minute experience online. In reality it ended up being about 2 hours, but that’s because our group was having such a great time towards the end. We could’ve left early if we were on a tight schedule, but we weren’t so we stuck around until the very end. We were also advised at time of booking that we needed to arrive 20 minutes early, so in the end we were at the falconry experience from 9:25am to 11:45am.

Where to Meet the Group

The meeting point for the Falconry Experience at Catalina Island is just past Descanso Beach Club. From the Avalon port, head towards the round, iconic Casino building. Continue past the casino and you will see beautiful Descanso Beach Club, a private beach where you can rent cabanas and chaise lounge chairs for the day. Just up the walking path, past Descanso Beach, you will see the check-in area for the Falconry Experience. In this area you will see check-in booths for some of the other day activities offered at Catalina, like the Zip Line Eco Tour and the Aerial Adventure. There is a restroom located right near the check-in as well.

How Many People Are on the Tour?

There were 12 people on the tour I booked, and it was a sunny Saturday in late May. I saw a large group lined up and waiting for the next tour after mine as I was leaving, so I think if you’re looking to book a less crowded time slot, go with the morning time slot. I chose the morning tour to avoid crowds, but also because I wanted to see the animals before they got tired or before the day got too hot. It turns out I was correct about avoiding the heat, but I did learn that they rotate out the birds for tours, so the birds flying in the morning experience will be different than the ones in the afternoon experience.

What to Expect for the Falconry Experience at Catalina Island

The Flying Demonstration

Our instructor Dave met our group at the check in area, and he had a beautiful white spotted falcon with him. We all stood on the grass and listened to Dave’s introduction about the falconry program at Catalina. He then introduced us to the bird and gave a demonstration of her flying abilities. She flew above us over the grass area, and even parked herself on a post under the shady trees while we saw 2 bald eagles fly overhead! Once the bald eagles were out of sight, our falcon came back out and played a bit of a game with Dave by trying to catch a lure.

Flying the Hawk

The best part of the Falconry Experience at Catalina Island was getting to fly the hawk. We were introduced to a beautiful Harris hawk named Willow, and given a bit history and instructions on what to do next. I was wondering how our group of 12 would all get to participate in the activity, but our instructor Dave already had it planned out. He had us split up into groups of two, and then the groups spread out in far corners of the grass area. Each pair was equipped with a falconry glove.

When it was my turn to interact with the hawk, I put the glove on and the instructor’s assistant came around to hand me a bird treat. I then held out my glove with the treat enclosed in my hand, called the bird’s name, and in flew Willow, gliding along with her impressive wingspan. She landed effortlessly on my glove, her large talons holding on tight, while she found her treat in my glove. I got to balance her there for a bit while my husband got some photos. When it was the next person’s turn, they called Willow and off she went. We took turns doing this until everyone had a chance to participate.

Meeting Other Awesome Birds

After the Harris hawk had visited everyone in the group, we were then led to another close by area where our instructor Dave introduced us to a few more beautiful birds they keep for the conservancy program. I’m sure the birds shown during this part of the experience vary per time of year, but during mine we got to see two Lannner falcons and an Eagle-owl. Dave held on to these birds and brought them around to each of us so we could pet them. One of the falcons was still baby with some down feathers here and there. He was so cute, and Dave let us know that we were helping the baby get used to humans by petting him. We pet the owl as well and got to pose next to him for some pictures.

This was a great part of the tour, and a chance to ask all the questions that hadn’t yet been answered. Dave had another tour starting after ours, but he didn’t rush us at all and took the time to show everyone the birds and answer all the questions. You could really tell that he cares very much for the birds and loves educating others about them. There was a table with some souvenirs and a tip jar. It was cash only, so be sure to bring some cash if you want to take home a souvenir! I bought a cap that says Catalina Falconry on it. I had a wonderful experience and would recommend the Falconry Experience at Catalina Island to anyone, all ages included.

What to Bring and Wear on the Falconry Experience at Catalina Island

  • Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. You will be standing in the sun for the entire experience.
  • Comfortable shoes. You will be standing most of the time, and on grass, so flat shoes are recommended.
  • Water or snacks if needed. I didn’t see any water fountains nearby. If absolutely needed, the Descanso bar and restaurant is nearby, but I would come prepared with your own water.
  • Weather appropriate clothing, depending on the season during which you’re visiting. You will be outside the entire time, so be sure to dress reasonably.
  • Cash for a tip for the instructor and extra if you want to purchase any souvenirs at the end of the experience.
  • Camera. There are some great photo opps on this experience!

Where to Book Your Catalina Falconry Experience

It’s recommended to book your spot ahead of time online for the Falconry Experience. Head to the Visit Catalina Website to sign up. The dates and times offered may vary by season, so be sure to check early and see if the experience will be operating during your visit. If you’re booking a weekend like I did, be sure you grab the early time slot for the best chance at beating the crowds.

Planning a Trip to Catalina Island?

My recent trip to Catalina Island, a small piece of paradise just off the coast of Southern California, was the perfect beach weekend getaway. I went in May, which is quite a gamble on California weather, but we lucked out with perfectly blue skies, a light beach breeze, and a high of 77 degrees Fahrenheit. I had a lot planned for this trip, but it turns out that spending a day at Descanso Beach Club on Catalina Island was one of the best parts of the vacation.

Why Visit Catalina Island?

Catalina Island is a small island paradise just about an hour away from Los Angeles if reached by ferry. It’s one of California’s Channel Islands, and is 22 miles long and 8 miles wide. There are two cities on the island: the popular tourist town of Avalon and the more remote town of Two Harbors. I’ve been to Catalina Island a handful of times throughout my life, and I’ve only ever visited Avalon. I hope to one day make it to Two Harbors. Catalina Island is a great escape for local Californians looking for a close but remote getaway, and it’s perfect for those visiting from other parts of the world because it helps gives provide a well rounded look at California’s beaches off the beaten track.

The Sleepy Beach Town of Avalon, Catalina

Avalon is a lovely harbor town that welcomes guests as they arrive at the island port. Colorful shops line the beach boardwalk and extend upward into the hilly island. Rows of boats line the harbor, parked neatly and shining bright white in the California sun. Hotels, restaurants, and gift shops are abundant, as are the photo opportunities of the harbor and the boardwalk, which has benches and fountains decorated with colorful mosaic tiles. Standing like a pillar at the far end of the harbor is Catalina Island’s crown jewel, the Avalon Casino, a historic ballroom and theater from the 1920’s. While there is a beach located in front of Avalon’s boardwalk, if you venture just beyond the Casino building, you will find the private beach paradise of Descanso Beach Club.

Spending a Day at Descanso Beach Club on Catalina Island

I’m notorious for jampacking my trips with activities and things to do. For example, I couldn’t say no to the adventurous jeep tour up into the hills, or the chance to fly falcons in the canyon. So spending an entire day relaxing at Descanso Beach Club was my idea of balancing out the pace of my trip to Catalina Island. It ended up being one of the most memorable highlights of the trip.

Renting Beach Cabanas and Lounge Chairs at Descanso Beach Club

Descanso Beach Club is a private beach, and they offer chaise lounge chairs and cabanas to rent for the day. It’s so refreshing to park yourself on the sand and just enjoy those ocean views. They offer signature cabanas on the beach, hillside cabanas located off the beach but still with ocean views, and, my favorite, presidential cabanas right on the water, with unobstructed views of the ocean. This was a special occasion trip for me, so I splurged and rented the presidential beach cabana.

What’s Included with a Cabana Rental

All cabana rentals come with towels, bottled water, and beach butler service with food and drink delivery. The presidential and signature cabanas come with a pair of chaise lounge chairs. And all cabanas are listed as having seasonal items subject to availability, including a crudité platter, smoothies, and popsicles on arrival, and they all offer bottle service at a separate charge.

What’s Included with a Chaise Lounge Chair Rental

Chaise lounge chairs are the most affordable rental option at the beach, and they are rented in pairs of two. These rentals come with towels, bottled water, a side table and umbrella, and beach butler service with food and drink delivery, which is everything you need when spending a day at Descanso Beach Club on Catalina Island. They offer seasonal welcome smoothies as well. It’s recommended to book your chaise lounge chairs ahead of time online as weekends tend to sell out.

Choosing the Location of Your Chaise Lounge Chairs

When booking your chaise lounges online ahead of time, you can select the row and location of your chairs. The front row gives you the best view of the ocean, but you also have a front row view of everyone on the sand and kids playing in front of you. If you get one of the back rows, you have an obstructed view the ocean but it’s bound to be a bit more quiet and private.

What to Do at Descanso Beach Club

As you enter Descanso Beach Club, on your left will be a rental stand where you can book several activities. You can rent snorkel gear and swim fins, paddle boards, and single or double kayaks for four hours at a time. They also offer wetsuits, windbreakers, sandals, dry bags, and soft ice chest coolers to bring out on your adventure. You can book these activities ahead of time online, or you can rent them at the stand on the beach.

Where to Eat and Drink while Spending a Day at Descanso Beach Club

There is a restaurant and bar onsite, which means you don’t even have to leave the beach for lunch. Good food and beverages are key when spending a day at Descanso Beach Club, and this location certainly delivers. The restaurant and bar are open for walk up visitors as well. The lunch menu is varied and seasonal, and includes vegetarian options. We ordered a few of their signature cocktails, which were fantastic, my favorite being the Painkiller. They serve beer and wine, and even offer ice buckets of bottled beer for groups. Since Descanso is a private beach, it’s one of the only places in California you can enjoy alcoholic beverages right on the sand.

What to Pack for Your Day at Descanso Beach Club on Catalina Island

Packing Items for the Water:

  • Water shoes. While the beach is breathtaking to behold from the comfortable chaise lounges and cabanas, getting into the water can be a challenge. Descanso Beach is a rocky beach, so water shoes are essential. Trust me, I sat there watching person after person head to the water in excitement, only to turn right back around, in pain and complaining about the large, slippery rocks under the waves.
  • A fun water floaty. Once you do get past the rocky shore, the water is beautiful and calm on a nice sunny day. I saw several people relaxing in bliss on giant inflatable flamingos, pineapples, and intertubes. If you forget to bring your own, there is a shop at Descanso that sells them.
  • Waterproof and sand proof cell phone pouch. If you’re going to be getting wet or playing in the sand, it’s always a good idea to protect your technology.
  • Beach towel. Descanso Beach Club offers towels to those renting the chaise lounges or cabanas, but if you prefer to bring your own quick dry, sand free towel, you certainly can.

Packing Items for the Beach

  • A good beach bag. Spending a day at Descanso Beach Club requires a fair bit of walking. It can be about a 15 minute walk from the main stretch of boardwalk. Needless to say, you won’t want to have to walk all the way back to your hotel if you forgot something. Bring a sturdy beach bag that can help you bring all your beach necessities.
  • Sun hat. This goes without saying, but protecting your face from the sun is a must. Check out my related article on Recommended Sun Hats for a Summer Vacation.
  • Beach games. There are so many fun games to play on the beach. Here are a few of my favorites.
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Water. They sell water at Descanso Beach Club, but it’s always nice to be prepared with your own. I love keeping a hydroflask in my beach bag to keep my water nice and cool.
  • Sandals. Just in case you’re wearing your walking shoes when you arrive at Descanso Beach Club, pack some sandals in your beach bag to change into once you arrive.

Spending a Day at Descanso Beach Club on Catalina Island is Totally Worth it

Paying the fee to rent the beach space and enjoy amazing food and cocktails with a view of the ocean was totally worth it to me. The presidential cabana was absolute paradise, and I absolutely recommend it for groups or those looking for something special on an anniversary or birthday. The chaise lounges and signature cabanas are the more affordable option, however, and include the same amazing beach service. The beach is kept very clean, the staff are very friendly, and it was over all an amazing location and experience.

Planning a Trip to Catalina Island?

Treaty Oak is my favorite whiskey distillery in Dripping Springs. Not only do they make great whiskeys, but the property is beautiful and massive, with plenty of picnic tables under shady oak trees. There are two bars for cocktails and sampling spirits, stages for live music, and a restaurant on site as well. Treaty Oak is a whiskey tasting experience where one can easily spend a whole afternoon. Below are some of things to do and see at Treaty Oak.

Visiting the Ranch at Treaty Oak

The Treaty Oak property is a 28 acre ranch in Dripping Springs. The old oak trees are what welcome visitors into this shady space. Tours are available for booking, but guests are welcome to just walk in and wander. The iconic whiskey distillery is the crown jewel of the ranch, surrounded by 2 bars, tasting areas, stages, and a restaurant. The space can also be booked for events on the Treaty Oak website.

The Rickhouse Bar

As soon as we got to Treaty Oak, we headed straight for the Rickhouse Bar. This space is open and inviting, with friendly bartenders who were happy to tell us about their whiskey, rum, gin, and craft beer. My favorite was the Ghost Hill bourbon. They had featured cocktails but were also happy to make whatever was requested. The space at the Rickhouse Bar has a relaxed atmosphere, with casual open seating and couches. This was a perfect first stop on our visit.

Mercantile Tasting Room

The Mercantile Tasting Room was our favorite spot at Treaty Oak Whiskey Distillery. In true Dripping Springs fashion, this location was entirely welcoming. It’s an enclosed space, with an intimate vibe. We loved talking to the bartenders here and just having a relaxing time. We even tried their Treaty Oak rum and it was fantastic. This is also where they sell the Treaty Oak merchandise, including drinking glasses, hats, candles, and BBQ sauce. I walked away with an old fashion cocktail scented candle.

Alice’s Restaurant: The spot for food at Treaty Oak Whiskey Distillery in Dripping Springs

Treaty Oak serves delicious home style food at Alice’s Restaurant. Located on the property, this is a convenient stop before or after your whiskey tasting at Rickhouse or Mercantile. They have specialty barbecue entrees and other comfort food sides like mac and cheese, coleslaw, and potato salad. The restaurant also serves Treaty Oak spirits and beer, and has plenty of seating inside. I can’t wait to return on a Sunday and try their Sunday brunch.

Live Music at Treaty Oak

My visit was on a weekday, so I didn’t get to enjoy the live music, but I loved the main stage set up. They have a large truck permanently parked and converted into an outdoor stage. They have live country and bluegrass bands on Friday and Saturday nights. Check the Treaty Oak event calendar for more details.

Planning a Road Trip Through Texas?

On my recent trip to Texas, I learned a lot about the bat watching boat tours offered in Austin that take visitors to see the infamous city bats. I had heard the stories of the massive bat colony residing in Austin, and wanted to find a unique way to see them instead of lining up on the bridge with hundreds of others. Taking to the water was the best idea because it gives a unique perspective from below as the bats emerge from their slumber and take off into the night sky. Below are some tips and recommendations for booking your own bat watching boat tour.

When to take a bat watching boat tour in Austin

Best Time of Year

The best time to see the infamous Austin bats fly over Lady Bird Lake is between March and November. If you’re looking to see the bats in full force, however, I recommend aiming for the warm summer months of July and August, with August being peak bat watching season. I still saw some of the bats in Austin in very early March, but there weren’t as many as you can expect later in the year.

Best Time of Day

The bats come out just after sunset. If you walk or boat under Congress Avenue Bridge before the sun goes down, the bats can be heard squeaking in the dark bridge crevices above you, getting ready to leave as soon as it’s dark enough. Be sure to get yourself a good viewing spot before the event begins, or book yourself the ultimate viewing opportunity on one of the bat watching boat tours in Austin.

Walking under Congress Avenue Bridge
Walking under Congress Avenue Bridge

What kinds of bats live in Austin, Texas?

The type of bats that live in Austin, Texas are Mexican free-tailed bats. They migrate from Mexico in the spring, and return in the fall. Of all the bridges along the Colorado River running through Austin, the entire colony of Mexican free-tailed bats choose to live under Congress Avenue Bridge. Their birthing season is in June, and the peak time for bat watching is in August. In August, the number of bats under the bridge reaches about 1.5 million, according to Visit Texas.

Which companies to use for bat watching boat tours in Austin

Capital Cruises

I used Capital Cruises to book my bat watching boat tour when I was in Austin. The entire experience was very smooth, and I would highly recommend them. The bat watching boats from Capital Cruises can be easily spotted by the iconic giant bat placed at the stern. Their check-in spot and dock is located right along Lady Bird Lake, and we showed up 30 minutes prior to departure and got a good seat on the boats. The tour, which lasted about an hour, took us cruising down the Colorado River for a sunset view of the Austin skyline. I enjoyed the bat facts and history from our tour guide about the building and sights around us.

Dock for Capital Cruises on Lady Bird Lake
Dock for Capital Cruises

After the sun went down, we made our way to Congress Avenue Bridge. I could see tons of people lined up on the bride, their dark silhouettes outlined against the night sky. People in kayaks were scattered around in the water as well, parked and waiting with a front row view for the bats to emerge. Our tour guide was prepared with a high powered red light, which had no effect on the bats, and allowed us to catch a good glimpse of them under the bridge and other darker areas. They are small bats and we had overcast skies, so they didn’t show up well in my photos, but I was happy I got to see them in person.

Lone Star Riverboat

The other boat company in Austin that operates bat watching boat tours is Lone Star Riverboat. I didn’t use this company, but I saw their check-in location at Lady Bird Lake and it looked very organized. Their red and blue boats stood out on the lake while we were out bat watching. Their tour seems to last about an hour as well, and they also were staffed with tour guides sharing the history of the bats and downtown Austin.

Tips for bat watching boat tours in Austin

  • Show up early to get a good spot on the boat
  • Bring a jacket as that breeze shows up on the water at sunset
  • Bring a good camera. I prefer the Sony A6000 Mirrorless camera.
  • Bring your own beverages and snacks, as there were none sold on the boat or dock
  • Consider packing some binoculars if you’d like a closer view of the bats

Planning a Trip to Texas?

Visiting Jacob’s Well Natural Area in Wimberley was an unplanned stop on my road trip through Texas, and it ended up being one of the best. This beautiful nature preserve in Hays County features unique hiking trails, bird watching, and best of all, underwater caves. If you’re looking for some unusual sightseeing, be sure to stop at Jacob’s Well and gaze into the clear blue opening of the second largest fully submerged cave in Texas (and dive in, if you dare). Below are some visitors tips I picked up from my time spent exploring this iconic and mysterious area.

Jacob’s Well is located in Jacob’s Well Natural Area in Wimberley, Texas. The entire natural area spans over 80 acres, and contains lots of hiking trails and areas of exploration. There is pretty clear signage from the entrance that directs you where to park for Jacob’s Well. The parking lot is right near the trailhead, and the trail is very well marked, ultimately leading you down to Jacob’s Well.

Hike the Trail to Jacob’s Well

Follow the occasional signs on the walking paths and you will easily find Jacob’s Well. This 0.9 mile, out and back hike is pretty easy-paced, but does contain uneven surfaces and some pretty steep and precarious stairs. Watch your step, take your time, and use those handrails. Along the trail route to Jacob’s Well you will pass lovely picnic tables and park benches shaded by massive trees. There are lots of open areas on this hike as well, however, so be sure to wear sunscreen and bring a hat in the summer months. It is recommended to hike in the morning hours to avoid heat and crowds.

Can you Swim in Jacob’s Well?

Swimming is welcomed in Jacob’s Well from May through September. There is no lifeguard on duty, however, so swim at your own risk. These cool waters are popular in the summer months for those visiting and sightseeing in Wimberley, Texas, or for those simply wanting to fulfill the dare of jumping into the dark abyss that is Jacob’s Well. October through April is used for aquatic restoration, so swimming is prohibited in the fall, winter, and spring months.

If you’re looking to get in the water, however, you will need to reserve your time slot. Visitors can Reserve a Swimming Time at Jacob’s Well through the Hays County Parks Department website. All swimming time slots are 2 hours total, so be sure to arrive on time to maximize your experience at Jacob’s Well. If you’re planning to visit during peak hours on a popular summer weekend, be sure to book in advance to guarantee your space.

Picnicking is encouraged, but be sure to clean up after yourself to keep the area clean and protect the wildlife.

Some History to Learn While Visiting Jacob’s Well in Wimberley, Texas

According to the posted signage in the park, the area around Jacob’s Well was originally frequented by several native American tribes including the Tonkawa, Jumano, and the Comanche. Early settlers in the 1800’s and 1900’s traveled by wagon to visit the area. It’s clear that the mystery of this deep well has intrigued travelers for centuries, and will continue to do so for many years to come.

History of Jacob’s Well
History of Jacob’s Well

Why is it Called Jacob’s Well?

The origin of the name “Jacob’s Well” is from 1850. One of the early settlers visiting Wimberley, Texas, Mr. William Winters, went searching one day for the source of Cypress Creek. He found a spring of water at the end of his hike and described it ”like unto a well in Bible times.” So it’s from biblical inspiration that the name came to be.
