About Me: The Girl With Blue Sails
Hi, I’m Olivia, travel blogger and content creator from Orange County, California. I’ve been to 19 countries and counting, seeking out the beauty in this world. I have a bachelor’s degree in creative writing, and love incorporating storytelling in my content. With my brand, Girl With Blue sails, I focus on adventure travel, otherworldly landscapes, and cultural experiences. I’m honored to share my stories and tips with you in hopes that they will inspire you to set sail on a journey of your own.
Why Blue Sails?
Untethered freedom. I once found myself on an unwanted career path and in a joyless relationship, and decided I needed a major overhaul in both my personal and professional life. I needed a reset. I used one of my favorite travel quotes as inspiration for a tattoo and as a new life mantra. The color of the blue sails was chosen by my tattoo artist at Black Diamond Tattoo in Venice Beach, CA.
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
Quote often attributed to Mark Twain but actual source remains unconfirmed.
Throwing off the Bowlines
I’ve always had two passions in life: writing and travel. I used my passion for writing to proudly get my Bachelor’s Degree in creative writing, but after being asked for the hundredth time “what are you going to do with that?” I conformed to societal expectations and decided I would teach. I have so much respect for teachers and thought I would love teaching, but on the final leg of my two years in the credential program, I’d had enough. It wasn’t for me. I quit, threw off the bowlines, and set sail in search of something new. It’s hard to admit you’ve made a mistake and it takes courage to leave the life you’ve built for yourself.
Soon after, I found an office job working for a tour operator and got to immerse myself daily into my other life-long passion, travel. I’ve spent quite a few years at that job and while it still brings me joy, I find myself getting the urge to set sail again, this time aiming closer to my own personal goals. I like to live with no regrets and am thankful for the zig-zag path that has lead me to where I am today. It’s because of my experiences that I now find myself finally inspired enough to combine my two passions of writing and travel.
“Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life.”
Jack Kerouac, On The Road
